- I insist on the opposite — <pre> saves the formatting of the original text, uses monospaced font (unlike block-quoted text) and has an overall closer look to the original.
Besides, there is no rule in the Checklist on formatting styles. As long as it is readable and close to the original - it will remain a matter of preference.
