Let me explain the behind.
If there are <p>s inside <figcaption>, it looks like that.
<p> means paragraph, not extra two new lines. The spaces between paragraphs is defined by CSS rules. Telegram converts the <p> tags inside <figcaption> to the text nodes separated by <br>'s, as you see in this example.
As I said, original article only uses <p>s, which means adding only one <br> between <p> elements' itself. The remaining margin is defined by the CSS rules. I hope it's not a reason to be rejected.

Structure is broken 'cos template can't handle the markup of the website correctly. Your template has another issues like this one. Try to write it again.
