In my opinion this issue concerns not only old articles, but all articles with images on this site. In case if image in one of them becomes unavailable, your template would refuse to load it while having placeholder image in browser. That's why I think its important to support such cases.
My and other competitor's templates handle it and load this placeholder image.
If so, you can easily show me newer article with a fetch error, right?

I'd like to point out that this @onerror attribute in image is used all over the site.
e.g. today's article:
