As a matter of fact it looks like the whole paywall mechanics was introduced on the site after contest was closed. I have not seen it during contest, there are no issues about it and no other template block IV generation because of it (which probably means that other competitors also didn't see paywalled pages).
I don't think it would be fair (from contest point of view) to decline a template because of error that was introduced long after the contest was closed and templates made impossible to change.
