Image captions are lost. They exist on the original page, and are visible to the visitor when viewing the gallery. See my template.

Not. The captions that can be extracted from the article are not correct, as they contain completely different information than in the original gallery.
I can give an example on your template. Compare the slideshow captions in the template and in the original gallery (link at end)
I think we should wait for the admin to clarify whether we should use such slideshows or we can leave only the link and the main image. But, in this case, it will not be much different from my template...
