The thing is, this is how the original gallery looks like: the image itself at the main focus, and the rest of images presented as a gallery. Just imagine a real word situation: a user wants to share the third image of this gallery (the red car). He/she sends the link with the following ending: ...?photo=3. If the image of the red car is not at the top, that friend will never understand which particular image user 1 wanted to share with, to put emphasize on. The friend will just see a gallery, with no context or focus. In short, although the image is duplicated, this is the only way to put focus on the image, as the sitemakers imply it. I cannot stress it enough: this is how the sitemakers wanted the gallery to be seen.
