Special Issue: Repair and Regeneration (4 of 6) (video)
Following tissue damage, a complex repair process is initiated to restore the integrity of the injured tissue; re-epithelialization is accompanied by a rapid inflammatory response as innate immune cells are rapidly recruited to the damaged area. Here, we exploit the optical translucency and genetic tractability of [I]Drosophila[/I] embryos to simultaneously follow both of these processes over 2 hours using confocal imaging in vivo. Following laser-induced damage to the embryonic epithelium (majenta GFP-tagged actin), [I]Drosophila[/I] macrophages (green GFP-tagged moesin) are rapidly recruited to the injury site, where they phagocytose necrotic wound debris and fight infection. This material relates to a paper that appeared in the June 9, 2017, issue of [I]Science[/I], published by AAAS. The paper, by S.A. Eming at University of Cologne in Cologne, Germany, and colleagues was titled, 'Inflammation and metabolism in tissue repair and regeneration.'
