It is obligatory to use a cover image:
If the image is present on the page and described in the source as “featured-img”, “cover”, “lead_img”, “main_image”, etc.

there is no property for this image that make us use it as cover image. the only property this image has is class="img-responsive" which is not mentioned in checklist. also this image is in middle of article, so it's not obligatory to use as cover image.
please read 6.2.2 Cover images once again.
