The template selects the cover of the first image from the article, pulling it out of the content.

the template doesn't use the first image as cover, it uses the image with attribute "image-article" as cover which is relevant in lots of cases, it's true that in this case image isn't from top of the article but the image is an intro for article and it's not a big deal to use it as cover image.
