Those desctiptions sum up the articles and are a bit more elaborate than the titles, so it makes sense to use such a description as a subtitle if there isn't one on the page already. Accepted by admin Intro / summary text is not the same as a subtitle. Also, if author name is unknown, then no author should be displayed.

As for the slideshow, slideshows are less advisable for articles with this structure. The way that this IV handles the photos, captions, and text is reasonable.
