This image links to the "/nautilus-print-edition" page in the shop on their website.
I suppose it was decided to be an advertisement and removed.
But it does not have any markings suggesting that it's an ad, besides the link address being to the shop section.
Also, the content of the picture is related to this article. Even if it seems now to not contribute much into the reader's experience, we shouldn't arbitrary remove something included by the author.
