Even though this template is excellent, in this particular article, there is no main article image and the scipt appears to take the first available image (or gif in this case) and puts it on top. This removes the image from where it is contextually needed inside the article.

I agree. This template otherwise seems to be perfect, but the issue needs to be fixed. Cover is optional, but the essential image is missing from the context.
