- You are mistaken). Class "wp-post-image" - is default image class in Wordpress(CMS) for any images. And other reasons have no power in this case, therefore cover in this case is optional.
p.s. this is not a "main", "featured", "lead", "cover" etc. class))

Well, in order not to let too much time pass, I report to you that the image is a cover. Several reasons:
1) img contains the class "wp-post-image" = image of the post!
2) it is immediately after the title and before the subtitle. See the comment <! - Sottotitolo -> before <h2 itemprop = "description"> (Sottotitolo = Subtitle)
3) looking at the original site the photo is not inserted in the text, but has a dedicated box and overhangs the whole article.
It's a cover :-)
