I don't think showing such amount of text as figcaption is a good idea. Would rather separate the figure it with dividers (like in original), and show as normal paragraph. Only "Fig. 1 Dynamic changes in 5hmC during B cell activation." should be figcaption.

Authors have other opinion: in source all this text is <figcaption>

In application users see complete figcaption under the image and they understand, that this text is related to image, not some strange paragraph without relations to next and previous text in the article

P.S. All your issues are minor design claims without affecting user experience.
