Template #11 Issue #1

This page has an unsupported iframe at the bottom, so it shouldn't generate an IV. Some of the links near the bottom were also formatted as Related Articles when they shouldn't be. I think it is ok to leave the actual related articles as text if there isn't a way to reliably extract them without disrupting other page content :)
Accepted by admin
Krond
This is weird, according to my template this article should not generate an IV because:

@unsupported: $body//iframe[contains(@src, "//players.brightcove.net/")]

If I prepend that line with a:

@debug: $body//iframe[contains(@src, "//players.brightcove.net/")]

I see that XPath hits the target, yet @unsuppirted doesn't work for some reason. I tried moving both lines to the top of the page yet this gives the same result: @debug works, @unsupported fails.

PS: @unsupported: //div[@class="brightcove-iframe-container"] doesn't work too.
Accepted by admin
It seems @unsupported doesn't work because the video is inside <related>

Template #13 Issue #1
Feb 10, 2019
This is a <related> block. I totally removed it from my template cause it has nothing in common with the article, though at least it should be formatted as such. The image comes from the first related article.
chuchu
Articles title contains "shutdown" - it's about Partial government shutdown
That means they have something in common
Accepted by admin
While it is true that such related articles in general are fine (We will not accept issues on whether or not links formatted as “Related articles” are thematically related enough or static enough.) there really is an issue with the *image from another article* showing up. It's totally unrelated.
Template #16 Issue #1
Feb 10, 2019
Related stories are here, but related galleries are missing.
Rochelle
The "More Photo Galleries" aren't directly related to the article so I left them out. It seems like they are just additional galleries not specific to the article content (e.g. article is about Christmas trees and the first link is about a formal dress shop).

6.3.2
"Other types of “More” links that are not suitable for the “Related articles” block should be removed, provided this is technically possible without endangering essential content. Examples:
- (Consistently) random unrelated articles.
- Dynamic lists of “Latest articles from this category”."
Declined by admin
These are not really related articles, rather "other types of 'more' links" and hence are fine to remove.
Template #16 Issue #2
Feb 10, 2019
Not related to article content.
Rochelle
It is related, because the article is an opinion piece, and this block is informing readers that they can submit letters. It only shows up on opinion pages, not news articles, etc.

I was treating the content as a sidebar because it appears on the right side when viewing the desktop site, so I appended it to the bottom to not disrupt the main article flow.

4
"Side bars removed OR adjusted and appended to bottom of IV page"

(I actually did remove these "article-component" blocks in my previous template, but I added them back in after receiving issues about the missing content.)

Live update article
Rochelle
Are all pages with "Live updates" supposed to be excluded? There are others such as this one: https://www.seattletimes.com/seattle-news/transportation/transportation-seattle-alaskan-way-viaduct-highway-99-closure-traffic-updates-today-3/, which says "Originally published January 17, 2019 at 5:42 am | Updated January 17, 2019 at 7:33 pm"

It seems like they only continue the live updates for one day, and then after that the article is static.

Live update
Accepted by admin
this page is indeed dynamic.
Krond
Exactly this one is. But that's a just a type of news articles that went viral and are constantly changed with updates. This can be shootings, catastrophes, extreme weather conditions.

Nothing in this article directly shows that it's dynamic unless it's changed later to be. For example, here's another weather article:

https://www.seattletimes.com/seattle-news/weather/no-more-snow-for-seattle-and-a-dry-weekend-ahead-but-rain-could-complicate-things/

It shows no signs of dynamic content. Yet.

On the other hand, I can't directly say the article is dynamic just by timeline presence - it can be added to describe how the things evolved.

Still generate IV for live updates?
Rochelle
It's no longer a live update article. It says in the Editor's note, "This is a live account of the Seattle region’s snowy Monday, Feb. 11," and then there is a link to the live update page for Feb 12. It seems that these types of live update articles are only live for one day, and then they create a new one for the next day. It should be static now that the day is over. The title also now just says "Updates" whereas the other day it said "Live updates" in the title.

My template won't generate IV for the pages that still say that they are live.

Slideshow shouldn't be used because there isn't any other content on the page.

https://instantview.telegram.org/checklist#6-2-3-galleries-and-slideshows
Slideshows must not be used:
- When the article consists entirely of a slideshow (and its caption/description) and there's no other content.
Rochelle
Does the lead paragraph "Seattle is now in its snowiest February on record, and more is in the forecast" not count as content on the page? It appears below the slideshow on the site and is not a caption.

This looks like this is a part of the article. Make it at least <aside> like in the original article. Also, "Stormy weather tips" is missing (related articles actually).
Rochelle
The "Stormy weather tips" are the same type of content as in this issue https://instantview.telegram.org/contest/seattletimes.com/template13/issue1/, and they are ok to leave out or include.

There is no standard formatting for the side content (I see that the other template creater used a table instead of a pullquote for this block), so I think that is just up to the author and not a critical issue.
Accepted by admin
The side content definitely needs to be handled in a better way than just leaving them as regular paragraphs.

They don't make sense as regular paragraphs in this IV, and it corrupts the IV.
Template #34 Issue #1
Feb 16, 2019
No need to include author info. It's repeated on every single article author wrote.

Also, "Stormy weather tips" are related articles actually.
chuchu
You can make them as related, but it's not really related articles
Declined by admin
Regarding author at end, it's okay to leave it, as source page displays author twice too.

Regarding "Story weather tips", it seems okay to handle them this way.
Template #32 Issue #3

These links aren't related articles. They contained in "Read more about real estate here and on the Homes page." paragraph.
Rochelle
True that they are located after the articles, but they are still links to related content. Once the IV is live, those pages won't even actually be included in the Related Articles list because they don't generate IVs. However, it is not necessarily wrong to include them, because they are links to the related categories on the site.

Since the article is about analyzing recruiting ranks, that are displayed in the widget, this info seems important for the article

Template #32 Issue #5
Feb 17, 2019
I agree with https://instantview.telegram.org/contest/seattletimes.com/template32/issue1/.

"Seattle is now in its snowiest February on record, and more is in the forecast." seems more like a subtitle for me. What rules say about subtitles:
"Few publications actually use subtitles. Somewhat more common are short summary sentences <...> It is **advisable** but not required to represent them as subtitle elements". Moreover, this text is actually describes the slideshow.

So, this page doesn't really have a regular text apart from slideshow description and thus slideshow is needless here.
Rochelle
he text could be set as a subtitle or not; that is up to the template creator. The manual also says "Generally, it is advisable to avoid setting too much text as the subtitle. If the website publishes summaries that take an entire paragraph or even multiple paragraphs, it's better to use italic/bold text instead of the subtitle element to represent this content in IV." I've chosen to append this text to the aricles in bold rather than as a subtitle because in some articles, the summaries are longer. I saw that the writer of that issue changed their template to add the text as a subtitle for this article only, but they kept it as a paragraph in other articles. I've chosen to keep it consistent, so in my template it is part of the article content.

Yes, you can argue that the text describes the slideshow, but you can also argue that it is additional information... Slideshow is about Monday's snow, and text discusses February as a whole and goes on to discuss the future forecast.
Declined by admin
That text does not need to be a subtitle. So this issue will be declined.

However, this source page needs to be displayed in IV without a slideshow. This is one of the slideshow exceptions.

The slideshow is 31 photos. The line of text is one line. Slideshow is not a good method to display all the photos and captions when this source page is essentially just a gallery page.
Template #32 Issue #6

I noticed another issue on this page. Probably this block should be transformed into related articles, because in the current state I can't see the header "Related feature", but what I see are random low-quality picture and random link.

In short, you should do something about this bit.
Rochelle
Probably would be nice to format as a related article, but since it is somewhat subjective we can wait and see what the admin says.
Accepted by admin
Yes, these side content blocks should be handled in some better way.

There is an unsupported video between these two paragraphs.
Rochelle
I don't think this video is essential to the article. The exact same video ("Highlights: Washington men's basketball improves to 13-0 at home with big win over Utah") appears on other sports pages:

https://www.seattletimes.com/sports/seahawks/seahawks-mailbag-is-seattle-scouting-the-alliance-league-what-could-the-tailback-situation-look-like-in-2019-and-more/

https://www.seattletimes.com/sports/seahawks/seahawks-mailbag-would-frank-clark-take-a-hometown-discount-and-how-many-wins-might-the-seahawks-get-in-2019/

Also the video is about basketball highlights and the articles are about the Seahawks football team, so it isn't even really relevant.

Yet another unsupported widget
Rochelle
I actually did see this page earlier and thought about unsupporting it. But if you look at the paragraph under the "You Ask" graphic, it says "Enter your question in the box at the bottom of the page, or go *here*," and there's a link to the exact same form that's on the bottom of the page. So I thought it was fine to generate an IV since there is a way to reach the form even if it is not displayed directly.

These links shouldn't be Related Articles. They are links to different spots in the page, so they should be kept as text links in a side box.
Andrew
In most cases this block is used for related articles or supplementary information. Usually when there is an unordered list with links inside it it is meant for related articles. Examples:
1) https://www.seattletimes.com/seattle-news/weather/what-to-do-if-the-power-goes-out/ ("Stormy weather tips");
2) https://www.seattletimes.com/entertainment/movies/oscar-2019-predictions-who-will-win-who-should-win-and-what-about-those-back-and-forth-changes/ ("The 91th Academy Rewards");
3) https://www.seattletimes.com/sports/mariners/you-mean-the-nicest-guy-in-camp-evan-white-is-the-future-at-first-base-for-the-mariners/ ("REPORT FROM PEORIA 🌵").

It's unreliable to make any assumntions based on an anchor in the end of these links or based on the title ("Index").

Moreover, I don't think this is a critical issue. You barely need a navigation in such relatively short articles.
Accepted by admin
It's unacceptable to format index table as related, since these links will be displayed as 4 identical articles. The index should be preserved with anchors.
Andrew
Okay.

I also found new issues for winning template:
1) https://www.seattletimes.com/seattle-news/transportation/northwest-drivers-are-more-aggressive-than-they-used-to-be-poll-shows/ - "Related Stories" headers is missing
2) https://www.seattletimes.com/seattle-news/data/seattle-area-residents-least-likely-in-nation-to-give-their-neighborhoods-top-marks/ - "What do you want to know about the Seattle area? Submit your questions here." block should probably be formatted differently

P. S. Should we mark this widget as unsupported? https://instantview.telegram.org/contest/seattletimes.com/template58/issue2/
Accepted by admin
We don't accept issues in appeals, since all participants had at least 3 days to report them properly.
