A subtitle is a subordinate title of a published work or article giving additional information about its content. If this is present in the original article, a subtitle is required.
In my opinion, it really is more of a subtitle, especially considering there sometimes are quite long sentences. See

While it is definitely quite hard to distinguish a subtitle from a kicker sometimes, I do not think it is a valid issue as the content is preserved
