I'm sure admins were wrong with decision on Template #4.

They used enlargement links only for images which need it (maps, infographics, etc). 800px in TG may be not enough for this pics. I keep both full-size img in IV (if it's enough for user) and enlargement link for tall infographics of for images with a lot of text like there:

Also, this structure repeats original structure (btw it's a good UX) 1-to-1.
