It is possible for old articles to be related with the newer articles. Also this is how related articles works for this website.

Besides per checklist:
"We will not accept issues on whether or not links formatted as “Related articles” are thematically related enough or static enough."
Declined by admin
It seems okay to handle them as <related>.
