Four flights a day, seven days a week. Words: Penny Hsieh Mountains. Bungy Jumping. White-water rafting. Lord Of The Rings. More mountains. That might sum up what comes to many Singaporean minds when asked to name five things about New Zealand. Which would be like foreigners thinking Singapore is all about Sentosa, Orchard Road, “Lah”, Singapore Sling and a ban on chewing gum. It’s not completely inaccurate, but we know there’s so much more to the full picture. Like Siglap, Haji Lane, “Leh”, kopi siew dai and how we get really, really miffed when a TV show like Criminal Minds: Beyond Borders gets the chewing gum thing totally wrong. The islands of New Zealand hold so many more possibilities for even the most seasoned traveller. And with a total population of about 4.4 million (yup, that’s less than Singapore) residing on a land mass that’s significantly larger than ours, it would be safe to assume the country’s laid back landscape is littered with quirky finds. Finds that appeal to folk who have rules about only posting pictures with white borders on Instagram. A demographic who loves vintage finds and artisanal produce and hats. People who wear scarves in Singapore. You know who you are. This is the Singaporean Hipster Guide to New Zealand. EAT Source: Federal and Wolfe Federal and Wolfe serves up some great breakfast and lunch right in the heart of the city. Fresh meat and seafood are so abundant in New Zealand, it would be a waste to not get a fill of both segments of the food pyramid while you’re there. You’ll get a good dose of that at Rosie on Parnell in Auckland, where they’re famous for serving inventive modern New Zealand cuisine. If you find yourself in the CBD, check out the selection of organic coffee and food at Federal and Wolfe. You also get to have the satisfaction of being one of those people on vacation while everyone around you is working. A short distance from the CBD is Ponsonby Road, where you’ll find Dizengoff, which many say serves the best coffee in Auckland. If you’re up for a bit of adventure, try the chopped liver. If not, there a good selection of breakfast served all day. Source: Best Ugly Bagel Crazy good toppings from Best Ugly Bagels include everything from jams to honey to something called Zany Zeus cream cheese. When in Wellington, you won’t want to miss Best Ugly Bagels on Wellesley Street where, you guessed it, they make the best wood fired bagels on the spot with some crazy good toppings: Everything from jams to honey to something called Zany Zeus cream cheese. The Matterhorn on hipster central Cuba Street should also be on your list. National Geographic recently called this restaurant, café, cocktail bar and supper club a “hidden gem” when it named Wellington one of the six global cities for food lovers. Your foodie journey doesn’t need to only start when you land in New Zealand. The recently launched Deliciously Wholesome menu on Singapore Airlines means you’ll be able to enjoy inventive nosh once it’s wheels up from Changi Airport. Duo of watercress salad and smoked trout with shaved fennel, apples and yuzu jelly in a maple vinaigrette, anyone? DRINK Source: newzealand.com New Zealand’s a great place to enjoy a flight of some crafty local brews. You’re probably familiar with at least a few wines from New Zealand, but have you been clued in to the growing collective of craft brewers? Get a fresh tap of craft beer direct from iconic breweries like Choice Bros Brewing Limited and Garage Project in Wellington, or Epic Brewing Company or Birkenhead Brewing Company in Auckland. Cocktail bars are also popping up all over Auckland, where you’ll find all the tropes you’ve come to expect: Unmarked doors, bearded bartenders and delicious libations. Check out the art deco-inspired Housebar at Hotel DeBrett, and speakeasies like The Jefferson or Jack – a bar that’s so “secret”, it doesn’t have a website, Facebook or Instagram accounts. Just head through the storage room at the back of Harry or George (they’re affiliated bars) on Ponsonby Road and look like you know what you’re doing. Source: Housebar Take a moment to imbibe a classic cocktail and the beautiful art deco interiors of Housebar at Hotel DeBrett. If wine is still more your thing, but you’re not exactly the sort who’s keen on fancy vineyard living, then the Wine Cellar is the place for you: Vintage couches, affordable local and international wines, and a classic indie playlist. There’s even a secret passage to an indie-rock dive called the Whammy Bar. What’s not to love? Of course, if you prefer to stay sober (no judgement), get your toasty beans from local roasters around Auckland like Coffee General and Atomic Coffee Roasters, or Ripe Coffee Roasters and Raglan Roast if you’re in Wellington, so you and the friends you didn’t invite to join you on vacation can savour a great cuppa when you get back to Singapore. SHOP Source: Iko Iko Pick up some quirky homeware at Iko Iko that your next guests at home will surely ask you about. Why remember a trip to New Zealand with keepsakes like a kiwi-inspired fridge magnet when you can pick up some local crafts or vintage home décor? They’ll give you a better story to tell when you’re asked about where you got them. Head to the vicinity of Cuba Street and Wakefield Street in Wellington for a proper vintage fix with places like Hunters and Collectors, Madame Fancypants and Ziggurat Fashion Exchange (who are too hip for a website), or check out some crafts from New Zealand at Matchbox Studios, Brown and Co and Iko Iko. Source: The Great Ponsonby Art Hotel Add a good dose of colour to your vacation at The Great Ponsonby Art Hotel. In Auckland, The Great Ponsonby Art Hotel is a quaint little spot to make home base, perfect for art and culture lovers. Filled with eclectic art pieces and littered with a wide variety of books for you to peruse, it’s located just off the Ponsonby suburb that is brimming with eclectic boutiques to keep your shopping needs in check. Check out Flotsam and Jetsom and Good as Gold to pick up some unique clothing and accessories. EXPERIENCE Source: regionalparks.aucklandcouncil.govt.nz Tawhitokino beach is your very own private beach getaway. Aside from filling up on amah-zing food and drink and checking everything off your shopping list, what truly makes a vacation are unique experiences and spontaneous adventures. And in the wide expanse of New Zealand, such experiences can truly be one of a kind. Tawhitokino is a little regional park about 50 minutes way from Auckland. It’s home to a “secret beach”, picture-perfect with gorgeous white sand, that is begging for a quaint picnic of artisanal cheeses and local wines. You can only access this island during low tide so be sure to check the timing of the tides before you make any plans. Source: gibbsfarm.org.nz Head to Gibbs Farm if you’re looking for art that’s larger than life. Just a half hour drive from Auckland is Gibbs Farm, a privately owned open-air sculpture park features a jaw dropping collection of larger than life art installations from some of the world’s most significant artists. Your friends will say they hate you for spamming their Instagram feed, but it’ll really be because of a serious case of holiday envy. This 400-hectare space showcases the private art collection of New Zealand businessman Alan Gibbs, but it’s open to the public on very, very select days throughout the year. Must book. No joke. Source: wellingtonnz.com Source: Weta Workshop Get up close and personal with sets and props from some of the most iconic blockbusters at Weta Workshop. Movie buffs, you’re going to want to spend some time at the Weta Workshop in Wellington, where you’ll get to go behind the scenes and look at some of the awesome sets and props made by this award-winning production house. Having worked on numerous blockbusters (including, of course, the Lord of the Rings and Hobbit series), these guys have won 36 awards including five Oscars and four BAFTA’s for special effects, visual effects and miniature sets. Did we mention there’s an awesome gift shop? Bring back Gandalf’s hat, please. Discovering a different side to New Zealand just got easier thanks to the Singapore Airlines and Air New Zealand alliance.
