- While meta tags can provide images that are suitable for covers, these images are usually designed with sharing widgets in mind. They are meant to appear in something like a Facebook feed without the body of the article immediately attached. So they don't always work well when presented side by side with the article.
It is inadvisable to use meta images as covers, although it's not a crime unless the reporter can demonstrate how this can lead to bad IVs (duplicate images, etc.).
