The Instant View Editor uses a three-column layout, so you really want to use it on a desktop screen that's wide enough. Sorry for the inconvenience.

It's better if you add the date into the body as a paragraph, adding it to the $author variable is not flexible (eg if that variable was moved/hidden)

Maybe, but I wouldn't say this is a real issue, as it's more of a matter of opinion. Also, the date is near the author field by default, so in my opinion, adding it to the author variable is more natural.
