Note that these image links do not lead to the image directly, nor to a page that's dedicated to the image (that website has separate image/gallery pages), but instead they link to a certain portion of an article.
Does "the link behind the image leads to some different page or content"? Yep. It's not something like "the same image in a higher resolution".

And there's nothing "special" about this case. This website does use this kind of links.
