You say, images are the main medium of this page but it's not. So you should not split that gallery. Anyway cover image is wrong according to #6.2.2 - "Several images appear in the article one after another. In this case, the template should not break the sequence by extracting one of them as a cover"

- 1. "Several images appear in the article one after another." - in source it's slideshow, cap. It suitable when images in article, not images at slideshow.
2. It's cover image, because it's first image of slideshow. I did it already in other templates and admins said that it's ok to use first image of slideshow as cover on pages where main content - slideshow.
