1. This case is exactly the opposite. Using the alternative image (that is wider) you can see all the footballers, the result is better.
Of course they are all cropped image, in one case one is better than the other. That's why it's important to keep a link to the original photo. (the page, NOT the direct URL)
2. It' always better to use high resolution image.
