1) we CAN know which stars is ON or OFF - see source code attentively.
2) When you hover the mouse, you can also see an estimate.
3) ...We do not need to do "convert broken images ratings in numeric". Site has the concrete numeric rating. Numeric. Attentively please see the code and the site before answering on issues . ;)
