A tweet is set as cover. This doesn't work in mobile IV and results in a missing element.

Source: http://telegra.ph/Reports-4-08-02 (17)

This issue was created as part of our final processing of appeals on our earlier decisions submitted by the contestants. Thank you very much for taking the time and effort to participate in our contest!

Please note that we no longer accept submissions of new issues in any form. As of this stage, we can only process appeals on our decisions about the issue for which the appeal was submitted.
☄️
Oh?
The thing is, technically embeds are currently follow the same rules as any other content within <figure>s.

I haven't removed it from the body, IV engine did it.
If content can't be a cover, IV engine should not pick it up and remove from the body. It wouldn't do this for other content.

It's a really unexpected behavior, it's not documented anywhere, thus the issue is really easy to miss and really hard to find in time.
Moreover, it can (and I'd say really should) be fixed once for all in the IV engine.

Meantime, situations where this issue would occur are really rare. I haven't found any other occurrence during the contest time. So did no one else.

It seems to be a one-off case after all. In addition to unclarity on IV engine behavior/documentation part.
Accepted by admin
While it would indeed be more logical for the IV engine to throw an error and not generate an IV in case an unsupported element gets set as a cover, if such a change were made right now (as it will be before the next contest), it would result in articles that start in tweets to not be generated by this template for no good reason.

That said, articles that start in tweets are not uncommon on this website, e.g.:
June, 13 http://bit.ly/2v1zvBe
June, 8 http://bit.ly/2fbyYa6

It would have been better to not use covers on this domain altogether — especially since they are used inconsistently.

In addition to the above, this domain seems to have an issue with polls similar to the one we've recently discussed for its sister site (http://bit.ly/2v0IWAA). See this example from June, 8:

This cover image on original site is vertical and much larger in size https://c2n.me/40Klqo0
Fran Košec
There are three versions available:
meta tag, 752x501px: http://c0.thejournal.ie/media/2018/07/image-of-countess-de-markievicz-presented-to-the-house-of-commons-752x501.jpg
print image (which is what I'm using) 2300x1500px: https://img2.thejournal.ie/article/4133848/river?version=4133942
screen image 310x415px: http://c0.thejournal.ie/media/2018/07/image-of-countess-de-markievicz-presented-to-the-house-of-commons-310x415.jpg

I believe it's right to use the print image, since it's the highest quality (despite in this exact article it might be pixelated, but in others it's great quality). The author chooses how that image appears.

You're manually deleting the size from the IMG src ("-310x415.jpg"), and that's dangerous and considered bad practise.

Nah.

You're purposefully caching mobile sites by manually scrolling down the site and pressing "Switch to Mobile Site" in the IV editor.

This site doesn't use special links for its mobile layout. The IV engine will always load the desktop site, even if the URL that should load a mobile site is passed to it ("?switcher=touch"):
https://www.thejournal.ie/readme/opinion-when-the-beatles-played-dublin-in-1963-john-lennon-declared-were-all-irish-4537160-Mar2019/?switcher=touch

Checklist
6.1.2 Date and time
If conflicting dates are stored in multiple places on the source page, preference should be given to the time that is visible to the ordinary user who views the page in a browser.

The date the user sees is "Mon 1:01 AM" - that means last Monday, 08.04.2019., and not Thursday, 11.04.2019. as your template suggests.

I recached the site multiple times to check if that may be an old cached value, but it's not - you're showing the wrong date.
Vladislav
I display a correct date - https://c2n.me/411EiSg

After checking the page we found that there is a wrong date in the metadata (see https://imgur.com/a/uLEn5Zz). This was parsed by your template and it showed a wrong date. If this site consistently uses wrong metadata, it must not be used. Since they fixed that now, we consider it a one-off error. If there will be other issues regarding this, we might accept them.

For Admin:
This user create invalid issue for other templates, because page was be cached or updated. Look selected dates: 08 Apr 2019. But if you open issues of this user:
https://instantview.telegram.org/contest/thejournal.ie/template94/issue1/
then see what date is another.

Also, if you reload page, then see what date became correct (perhaps this is the problem on the side telegram). I create issue for me, where date for same page is correct , after reload page.

https://instantview.telegram.org/contest/thejournal.ie/template94/issue2/
Fran Košec
Oh, stop playing dumb. Really. I didn't report an invalid issue like you manually generate mobile pages and intentionally deceive others.

Of course the date on the site changed because it's dynamic and in some parts of the world now it's Monday. I cached the page when I reported the issue.

As an example:
When an article is published, the date starts off dynamic: "3 hours ago" and then as time passes it changes to "Monday, 1:01 AM" which changes to "Apr 8th 2019, 1:01 AM" after a week. The only valid way to parse time is to parse this, what the user sees, because meta data is often wrong.

Since Владислав is implying I'm somehow cheating - I'm not. He's parsing the dates in a wrong way.

"Tue 5:11 AM" which the user sees implies 09 Apr, and not 11 Apr which is Thursday. He's using <meta> data which is wrong, and changes when an article is updated - that may lead to confusion. If an article written in 2018. gets updated in 2019., <meta> data would change to 2019. and Владислав's template would parse it wrong.

Wrong datetime. Author of this template used a current time. Look next issues to see the ever-changing time. Remember, it's 23:18 and look next issue
Fran Košec
I have explained this here:
https://instantview.telegram.org/contest/thejournal.ie/template95/issue1/
and here:
https://instantview.telegram.org/contest/thejournal.ie/template93/issue2/

I'm parsing the relative date the user sees, so "4 hours ago" is converted by @datetime function and may oscilate by +/- 1 hour since it's imprecise. But it's still better to use that than <meta> data which chan vary by days, or even weeks (see previous issues).

Time is optional and it doesn't matter if it's +/- 1 hour, it's important we get the date mostly correct, which my template does. The only way to do this is to parse the relative date the user sees, which you selected in your report - "4 hours ago".
Declined by admin
Duplicated issue
Accepted by admin
Marked as duplicated by mistake. This is the first one.
Both reporters are right: your template isn't able to display the correct time (see provided examples). The time will be always incorrect since "4 hours ago" format doesn't provide info about minutes.
Since the publication time is available in meta, it must be used in this case.
Accepted by admin
But feel free to provide examples where pubdate from meta is critically different in appeal.
Fran Košec
Please reconsider because the reason I'm using the displayed time is <meta property="article:post_date"> is often wrong, and here are some of the examples:
https://instantview.telegram.org/contest/thejournal.ie/template94/issue1/
https://instantview.telegram.org/contest/thejournal.ie/template94/issue3/
https://instantview.telegram.org/contest/thejournal.ie/template94/issue4/
He was using datetime from <meta post_date> here. There are more issues and articles like these. Some were even showing dates in the future! On some "post_date" was dated after "post_modified".
Check those two properties on this very article!

The question is: Do you want the time to be off by +/-1 hour in the first 24 hours of the news article being posted (after that it changes to exact time in minutes), or do you want to have many articles with dates off by days or weeks?

I still believe my solution is right. You can't know when the <meta> data will be wrong, so we should use the displayed time on the page to be absolutely sure.

Oh Yes, your IV does not support the mobile version of the site: wrong author on mobile version.

Open link please and check author - https://www.thejournal.ie/readme/opinion-when-the-beatles-played-dublin-in-1963-john-lennon-declared-were-all-irish-4537160-Mar2019/?switcher=touch

P.S. link to mobile version located in footer, because mobile version should be supported.

See: https://instantview.telegram.org/contest/thejournal.ie/template89/issue3/
Fran Košec
Recache the site and everything is all right.

You're still deceiving us and lying. We don't need to support it because the only way to get the mobile site is to manually change the layout in IV editor to cache the mobile site by scrolling all the way down and clicking "SWITCH TO MOBILE SITE" or manually adding "/?switcher=touch" to the end of the URL which then disappears. When you're on mobile or desktop site, that "/?switcher=touch" disappears.

You're linking the issue that an admin accidentally accepted. I once fell on your tricks and mobile pages you cached, but then realised it's wrong to report such stuff.

Response to:
https://instantview.telegram.org/contest/thejournal.ie/template95/issue6/

This is the recached page, and everything works. Владислав Творогов is manually caching mobile sites on purpose, which will never occur in real life. No one will scroll down, right click on the "Switch to Mobile Site" link and share that URL. Or manually add the string "/?switcher=touch" to the end of the URL being shared. That's the only way to force a mobile page to be generated.

When you're browsing either on mobile or on desktop, the URL will be the same:
and it will be shared, resulting in properly created IV.
Fran Košec
Also, refer to the checklist:
https://instantview.telegram.org/checklist#6-5-1-subdomains

Note: We will add the necessary redirects so that Telegram apps will show IVs for articles on the main domain when users share links to the mobile version. It is not necessary to support pages of the mobile version.

Wrong preview image. That preview image not found in the content of article. It would be better to use the image from the cover or taken from the text.
Fran Košec
Telegra.ph answer if this gets cut off: https://telegra.ph/thejournalie-Template-95-Issue-8-04-15

This is what the site picked to use as the image from the source code.

You're comically nitpicking. Out of thousands of articles, this one has a different image the author chose to represent it.

By the way, have a look at other articles with vertical images - my template presents them right, which is more important, I believe:

Also wrong preview image. Do not mindlessly use images from meta tags when there is a cover or images in the text of the article.
Fran Košec
Stop and think for a moment.

The article is about construction. The author picks a main image to present an article. Sometimes it doesn't appear in the article, and is put into relevant <meta>. The image put in <meta> and the one I use is the one picked by the author, and as you can see - it's a construction crane, which is related to the theme of this article.

As a matter of fact, it's way more meaningful to pick that image than the "NOTEWORTHY" image/banner that appears on the site.

When you share this URL to Facebook, as an example - the image I use will show as a preview, as well - because the author intended it that way.

Recache the page - everything is fine.

Related / duplicate:
https://instantview.telegram.org/contest/thejournal.ie/template95/issue6/

You're still cheating, deceiving and spamming with issues. This is a non-issue, because a mobile version of this site will never be cached. Regular people don't usually open an IV editor, manually click the "SWITCH TO MOBILE SITE" to cache it and then share a link via Telegram.

Admins have determined in multiple raised issues that this is invalid and will be declined.

Sorry for duplicate, but I want note what now mobile version is correctly worked (earlier was a problems with it and Fran user think what I'm is cheater xD or what this is telegram cache). Now, after reload page mobile version is saved. Therefore you should be support mobile version and to fix author name.

It's not safe to rely on <meta> to parse dates because they are not consistent and dependable. The safest way is to parse what the user sees.

I'm parsing "23 hours ago" with @datetime as it's the only way to get consistent times the user sees.

It doesn't even work in the original article. It's an author or site error. It's not up to us to fix those. This is an isolated edge case.

This embed is broken on the original site. It simply doesn't work. You're the king of reporting duplicate issues.

Facebook embeds without such errors work without problems:

https://www.thejournal.ie/edmund-honohon-vulture-funds-4553565-Mar2019/

And so on.

Something broke a couple of their embeds - I guess the site changed over the years. It's not our job to fix the original site - we might break something else more often than not.

For admins, as an addendum to this appeal:
https://instantview.telegram.org/contest/thejournal.ie/template95/issue2/

That appeal was not answered in three days of me worrying about it, so I resubmitted my template with a series of fixes. I couldn't risk losing that appeal and having my competitor win with huge issues.

I have found a way to reliably identify articles with mismatching dates and times in their <meta> and the time they show to the user. I can now parse and show proper time down to the accuracy of 1 minute for all articles. Additionally, I have now built in support for DST.

Welp... Get ready for another three days of Владислав Творогов's duplicate invalid issues. :)
Fran Košec
Also:
https://instantview.telegram.org/contest/thejournal.ie/template102/issue1/

His template is parsing *every* article that's over a day and under a week old as if it were posted in the future. At least he got the time right, but the date is always 7 days off and in the future.

He's intentionally trying to confuse the reviewer in his answer, instead of pulling and fixing his template.

Missing unsupported "twitter-timeline" widget between selected paragraphs -https://clip2net.com/s/41aEEzR
Fran Košec
I crawled through all the articles from 2016. onwards and found only two instances (and that is including this one) where they used this type of a widget. None in 2018. and none in 2019.

This is a widget that is not critical to be shown because at this moment it shows latest tweets from the user they selected which are not relevant to the article at all. The article is from 2017. and the widget shows tweets sent out a couple of hours ago.

We can play this game of whack-a-mole of finding very unique stuff on this huge site and you copying my template forever, but it just has to stop at some point...

I firmly believe this is not critical because they *really* don't use this widget at all. And of all the two times they had used it - it's not relevant anymore, it's useless in the context of those two articles.
Declined by admin
Although the embed content is related to the article, it seems it's not used in more recent articles anymore. Not critical
